Volunteer Opportunities with Village at Ithaca
Hands-on with Youth or Families:
ACHIEVEMENT COACH: Engage students in their academic development by: encouraging them to see themselves as capable learners, assisting them with their homework, working with students to increase their understanding of key concepts in their courses, encouraging them to always give their best effort, connecting with students to build trust and comfort, helping them identify their strengths and develop strategies for using them more productively, and increasing positive peer support for academic success.
Time Commitment: Orientation & Training 2-4 hours. Tutoring time from 1.5 to 4 hours weekly.
READING BUDDY: Work with 1st-4th grade students at Beverly J. Martin Elementary School, developing literacy skills and a love of reading and writing. Time Commitment: 1-4 hours weekly
FAMILY ADVOCATE: Serve parents and caregivers by acting as a liaison between the school district and the family, and helping to navigate school policies and programs in support of their children.
Time Commitment: 2-4 hours monthly based on family needs, plus 3 hours of ongoing training quarterly
Hands-on, supporting Village staff:
EDUCATOR SUPPORT: Provide support in researching educational materials for our tutoring programs, working closely with the Program Coordinator. Time Commitment: 1-3 hours monthly.
NEWSLETTER, BLOGGER, SOCIAL MEDIA REPRESENTATIVE: Keeping up-to-date with Village activities, writing newsletter articles, posting to our social media outlets, etc.
Time Commitment: 1-3 hours weekly
OFFICE AND ADMINISTRATIVE SUPPORT: General office support – file and organize documents, research and gather information, prepare mailings, and other general office work. Experience with Microsoft application a plus, but not necessary.
Time Commitment: from 1 hour weekly to 8 hours monthly
Leadership Opportunities (Time Commitment, 1- 4 hours monthly):
SERVING ON THE VILLAGE BOARD OF DIRECTORS: Do you have passion for the Village mission and the time to give to our cause? We have opportunities for Board membership, program development and delivery, community outreach, and fundraising. If you have previous board service, leadership, development, or nonprofit volunteer experience, we would like to hear from you.
FAMILY ADVOCACY PROGRAM ADVISORY COMMITTEE: Serves as a steering committee for the Family Advocacy Program. Helping to plan advocate trainings, provide support for advocates and families. Perfect for someone with a strong commitment to helping families navigate the Ithaca City and Tompkins County areas Schools.
STUDENT SUCCESS CENTER ADVISORY COMMITTEE: Works as a steering committee for the Student Success Center helping to direct and grow the offerings of the SSC. Responsible for making policy decisions, recruitment of students and achievement coaches, and program development. This Project Committee would be perfect for someone with a vested interest in improving the programs that support holistic growth in the students of our local village.
EVENTS COORDINATION: Do you have a passion for planning events? Are you an organizer? Recruit volunteers from our database or within the community and lead a committee to plan a Village fundraising event. This could include a Board of Education Candidates Forum, Lift Every Voice concert, or other events the Village has hosted over the years.
DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE: Explores a variety of ways to grow the financial security of the Village at Ithaca. This team has room for people with experience or interest in fundraising event planning, grant research and proposal writing, campaign planning, individual donor development, or other avenues to raise funds for the work of the Village at Ithaca.
MARKETING COMMITTEE: Responsible for all marketing materials for the Village at Ithaca: any flyers, the website, and social media efforts. This team works closely with each of the other Project Teams to help them promote events, most specifically with the Development Project Team in promoting the Village’s fundraisers.
