Activists Committed To Interrupting Oppression Now

In 2006, a Black mother in Ithaca, sued the Ithaca City School District (ICSD) after their lack of responsiveness to her complaints about the racial bullying her daughter was receiving at school. A group of activists who had long worked to address racism came together to discuss how we could support this mom. After our third meeting, we named ourselves A.C.T.I.O.N.
Black Momba

Black Momba is a collective of female educators, youth advocates, doulas, and parents committed to multi-generational support of Black mothering and joyful outcomes for their children. We believe in the power of community and mutual care. Black Mamba supports Black mothers and caregivers in raising their children by offering practical help, emotional support, and fostering a deep sense of connection. Through shared parenting knowledge, policy advocacy, and culturally relevant resources, we work to address the unique challenges Black mothers face.

The African Women’s Initiative is a non-profit, cultural, and charitable organization which aims to make significant contributions to social and economic development in local and Diasporic African communities.

The mission of Black Hands Universal is to provide services and programs that address the needs and concerns of disenfranchised people in Ithaca. Black Hands Universal is a BIPOC led grassroots organization, whose strength lies in community connection, community voice, and community action.
Off the Table, Hillberry’s Animal Sanctuary

Our mission is to establish a sustainable sanctuary for neglected, abused and abandoned creatures of the field, providing them a life of refuge, safety and care to that will afford opportunities for benign humans visitation for appreciation of the ethical treatment of animals, for education about our animals and their needs, for the promotion of interspecies compassion generally, and for work, on an employed and or volunteer basis, especially by youth and young adults of challenge and from challenging backgrounds, to help them discover their motivations and strengths and to find paths to fulfillment in their own lives in work and society.
Community Food Coalition

The Community Food Coalition’s mission is to support our neighbors experiencing food insecurity by providing them with nutritious food and mindful interactions using a lens of social justice and solidarity to shape our practices.The Community Food Coalition is comprised of Tompkins County food pantry and meal site partners of the Food Bank of the Southern Tier (FBST), as well as established agencies working in the community to further the mission.
